Bondi Beach is Australia's
most famous beach. It is located only minutes from downtown Sydney and
was the site of the 2000 Olympic Beach Volleyball competition.
This panorama image
(aspect ratio 4:1) encompasses virtually the full one-kilometre length
of the beach and classically depicts the beach experience which Australians
hold dear.
Bondi Beach was composed digitally by combining three separate
'top-side' images (taken with an un-housed F4 Nikon and 20mm lens) with
three 'in-water' images (taken with a housed Nikon F4 also equipped with
a 20mm lens). No filters were used. Some tumbling of both photographer
and camera in the heavier waves resulted.
The swimmer ploughing through the wave on the right is local resident
Wade Campbell, a fitness instructor and also a player for Randwick first-grade
Rugby Union.
It was necessary for Wade to dive through an approaching wave many, many
times with the camera set on fast motor-drive to capture the ideal composition.
The two 'ideal' wave shots were selected amongst some 300 exposures.
